MiNDFOOD Short Story Winners 2016

Announcing the winners of our Short Story competition for 2016…

Superhero

Celia Coyne’s moving story “Superhero”, about a daughter’s relationship with her mother who suffers from ill mental health, impressed the judges enough to be one of the grand winners of this year’s competition.

The Quest

“The Quest” focuses on the mysterious Jelly Woman and her quest for an elusive cake. This intriguing story impressed the judges to be the grand winner for this year.

A Clash of Cultures

Our first winner in MiNDFOOD’s Short Story Competition is Chris Marcic. Chris retired to the east coast of Australia with her musician husband nearly three years ago after spending 38 years in Alice Springs. In the Centre, she worked variously as a newspaper journalist, ministerial officer, high school English teacher and casual presenter for 783ABC, Alice Springs. Since retiring, she has been able to devote more time to writing and has done well in local literary competitions over the last couple of years. When not writing, you’ll find her down at the beach walking her dogs, swimming or paddle-boarding when the tide is high.

Tick Tock

John was born in a small town in Somerset, England, and brought up in Woolwich, a worn down, largely military part of South East London. The Beresford Square market was very much the focal point of the area, and the people who owned the barrows were almost all second or third generation, and real slick salesmen. My brother was in the Merchant Navy and had visited NZ several times. When he told me that the pavements in Queen Street in Auckland had a white line down the middle I knew that there was a place I wanted to see. I started writing after a creative writing class with Michael Morrissey at Mt. Albert Grammar and discovered how much I liked building a story.
