As 2020 kicks into gear, fitness is at the top of many resolution lists. But as daily life gets in the way, it can be hard to stay excited and engaged with our workouts. Switching up your exercise routine can be a great way to stay motivated and on track.

Whether you’ve got specific fitness goals or just want to change up your weekly routine, check out our new workout trends to try in 2020.

Bouldering

Time to bring out your inner child and hit the climbing wall. In the past few years, bouldering has quickly worked its way up the ranks of trendy exercises. As a complete full-body workout, you get the benefit of strengthening your arms, legs and core while improving flexibility and stamina.

If you’re afraid of heights, don’t worry. Unlike rock climbing, bouldering doesn’t use ropes or harnesses. You only have to climb a few metres up then land safely on a crash pad.

The great thing about bouldering is that you don’t have to be a pro to give it a go. Bouldering gyms have a range of climbs for beginners to experts, making it a great option for those who want to strengthen their whole body while having fun.

Barre

If you’re a fan of yoga and pilates, we recommend giving barre a go. Based on ballet postures, barre combines common pilates and yoga poses to develop your core muscles, balancing skills and flexibility.

If you’re someone who tends to slouch, barre is a great way to improve your posture while losing weight. Barre is typically more intense than yoga so be prepared to sweat.

Most classes will take you through upper body exercises before transitioning to the barre for some lower-body routines.

Ocean swimming

With summer upon us, it’s the perfect time to get outdoors and hit the water. Swimming – whether it’s in the pool or the ocean – is a great cardio exercise with the added benefit of reducing the impact on your joints.

If you’re used to doing laps in the pool, try mixing up your swimming routine by getting in the ocean.

Many cities like Auckland and Sydney host weekly ocean swimming events for beginner to advanced swimmers. Events are a great way to take the plunge and meet fellow swimmers.
