The 55-year-old and his fiancée Carrie Symonds, 32, welcomed a baby boy on Wednesday morning, a spokesperson for the “thrilled” couple announced.

“The PM and Ms Symonds would like to thank the fantastic NHS maternity team,” the spokesperson said. Johnson was at the London hospital with Symonds for the birth. Although was back to work the following morning at Downing Street where he is leading the response to the pandemic.

Johnson is expected to take a short period paternity leave “at some point later in the year, but not now,” a Downing Street spokesperson said.

Downing Street declined to say whether the baby was born prematurely, and did not provide details of the weight, timing, nature or location of the birth.

This is the fifth, although some say sixth, child for Johnson. The British Prime Minister has four children from his second marriage.  The boy is the first child for Symonds.

The last time a child was born to a sitting prime minister was in 2010, when David Cameron and his wife, Samantha Cameron, welcomed their daughter Florence.

The Queen has sent a private message of good wishes to the couple to congratulate them on the birth of their son, Buckingham Palace said.
