Their lives took separate paths since 2016. Last week’s revelation brought a newfound awareness of Pinkett Smith’s concealed complexities, leaving Smith with a sense of awakening.
In an email correspondence with the New York Times, Smith shared his realisation.
The statement read, “When you’ve been with someone for more than half of your life, a sort of emotional blindness sets in, and you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties.”
This personal insight marks a shift in Smith’s perception of his wife. Smith now recognises her as “more resilient, clever, and compassionate than he’d understood.”
These revelations stand in stark contrast to the image the couple had previously projected of their relationship. In a televised interview just a year ago, Smith affirmed, “There’s never been infidelity in our marriage. Jada and I talk about everything, and we have never surprised one another with anything ever.”
Pinkett Smith has emphasised that they are currently in the process of “figuring out” their future together.
She acknowledged that they are engaged in intense efforts to define the path forward. In her own words, “We’re still figuring it out. We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other, and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us… I’m going to be by his side but also allow him to have to figure this out for himself.”
What is emotional blindness?
While not a clinical term, emotional blindness describes the situation where people in a long-term relationship may become less attuned to the emotions and nuances of their partner. It implies a lack of emotional awareness or sensitivity towards the feelings and subtleties that exist within the relationship.
Emotional dynamics in relationships can be complex and can vary greatly from one couple to another.
