Travelling around Aotearoa isn’t just about the destination – there are so many stunning things to see along the way, you can savour the journey by driving between each stop on your itinerary. Here are some of the country’s top road trips.

Surf Highway 45 – 4 Days

When surf’s up, it’s hard to beat this route along the coast of Taranaki. Surf Highway 45 is known for its world-class surfing spots, with breaks suitable for all skill levels. From the legendary break at Stent Road to the famous Kumera Patch, surfers will find plenty of spots to catch the perfect wave. And unlike some other popular surfing destinations, the Surf Highway 45 offers uncrowded beaches. That means surfers can enjoy long rides without having to compete for waves.

Explore Omapere, Northland

Twin Coast Discovery – 6-7 Days

This road trip at the top of the country will take you through rugged coastlines, rolling hills, lush forests and sparkling lakes. Tour both coastlines in one trip and along the way, encounter North Island highlights such as the Bay of Islands, the Waipoua Forest and the Hokianga Harbour.

Southern Scenic Route – 5-6 Days

Journey along the southeastern coast of the South Island on this epic trip passing through some of the country’s most beautiful treasures, including Fiordland National Park, home to Milford Sound, and the Catlins coastal area. Spanning Auckland to the Bay of Plenty, the Pacific Coast Highway takes you past some of New Zealand’s most picturesque beaches, including those on the Coromandel Peninsula and Mount Maunganui. This is the perfect road trip for those after some scenic relaxation during the warmer months.

Alpine Pacific Touring Route – 4 Days

This wonderful journey through the Canterbury region is New Zealand’s newest touring route. Experience marine encounters in Kaikōura, heavenly hot pools in Hanmer Springs, wine tasting in Waipara, and arts and heritage in Christchurch. All paired with exquisite landscapes along the way, of course.

Classic New Zealand Wine Trail – 5 Days

As with the other road trips on this list, you’ll experience stunning scenery, but this trail is highly recommended for lovers of wine and food. This trip will take you through three of New Zealand’s most famous wine regions. From Hawke’s Bay in the North Island to Marlborough in the South Island, you’ll stop in Wairarapa and Wellington along the way.

Thermal Explorer Highway – 5-6 Days

Explore some of Aotearoa’s most unique natural spectacles on this journey through the heart of the North Island. Discover a geothermal wonderland on your travels, with opportunities to see boiling mud pools, hot springs and geysers. A stop in Waitomo will allow you to witness the famous glittering glowworms in the expansive underground cave system.

Forgotten World Highway – 3 Days

You can take New Zealand’s oldest heritage trail as a three-hour scenic drive or turn it into a long-weekend getaway. Journey from Taumarunui to Whangamōmona to Stratford, with plenty of stops for adventure activities along the way. Known for its stunning natural beauty, this trip will take you through a remote and isolated region with a rich history.

The Great Alpine Highway – 3 Days

You can take the TranzAlpine train route by road. The road travels from one side of the South Island to the other while encountering charming historic towns and dramatic scenery. The trip will take you through Arthur’s Pass National Park, home to some of the most impressive alpine landscapes in Aotearoa.
