In March 2019 Australian audiences will have an extraordinary opportunity to come face-to-face with the fascinating figures of British royalty, and explore the story of Britain’s monarchy through masterworks of painting, sculpture and photography with the new major international exhibition, Tudors to Windsors: British Royal Portraits.
This exhibition will feature more than 50 treasures from London’s revered National Portrait Gallery, many of which have never before been seen outside the United Kingdom. It will also highlight major events in British (and world) history from the sixteenth century to the present, examining the ways in which royal portraits were impacted by both the personalities of individual monarchs and wider historical change.
Presenting some of the most significant royal portraits, Tudors to Windsors: British Royal Portraits will explore five royal dynasties: the Tudors, the Stuarts, the Georgians, the Victorians and the Windsors; shedding light on key figures and important historical moments. Among the many works on view will be portraits of King Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth I, King George III, Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth II, Diana, Princess of Wales, and Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge.
