Top tips for a whiter smile

By Cover Media via Reuters Connect

White teeth
Bust out your pearly whites and smile with a little extra care and consideration.

The best way to keep your teeth looking white is to keep them clean by brushing and flossing twice a day.

White, bright teeth don’t just look nice; they can also contribute to your self-confidence.

Achieving whiter teeth does not have to be a complex process. According to Dr Raj Juneja, Principal Dentist at Face Teeth Smile Dental Clinic, you can do a number of different things to keep your pearly whites looking picture-perfect.

Regular brushing and flossing

Of course, the best way to keep your teeth looking white is by brushing and flossing twice a day.

“Brush at least twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush,” Dr Juneja advises. “Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between teeth, preventing staining and promoting overall oral health. Visiting a dental hygienist regularly is also recommended to ensure professional cleaning of the teeth and stain removal is performed.”

Whitening toothpaste

If you are worried about your teeth becoming discoloured, you could try a toothpaste that is specifically made for whitening teeth.

“Whitening toothpaste is formulated with mild abrasives that help remove surface stains from teeth,” Dr Juneja explains. “Use ones your dentist recommends as an adjunct to professional teeth whitening.”

Avoid certain foods

Some foods and drinks can leave your teeth with stains.

“Coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and dark-coloured sauces are among the culprits,” the expert says. “While you don’t need to completely eliminate these items, moderating your consumption and rinsing your mouth afterward can help reduce staining.”

Go professional

Professional teeth whitening is an effective way of getting great results.

“For faster and more dramatic results, consider professional teeth whitening,” Dr Juneja recommends. “In-office treatments utilize stronger whitening agents and advanced techniques to deliver noticeable improvements in a short amount of time.”

At-home whitening kits

If you would prefer, you could try the at-home route.

“Dentist-prescribed at-home whitening kits provide convenience and gradual results. These kits include custom-fitted trays and a professional-grade whitening gel that you apply at your own pace,” the dentist explains.

Avoid tobacco products

Tobacco is one of the leading causes of teeth staining, so it is important to avoid products containing it.

“Not only does it contribute to discolouration, but it also poses serious risks to oral health,” Dr Juneja warns. “Quitting tobacco can lead to improved teeth colour and overall oral well-being.”
