After spending most of her 70-year reign at Buckingham Palace, the Queen has decided to leave permanently.
The Queen left London at the beginning of the Pandemic in 2020 and moved to Windsor Castle to isolate with the Duke of Edinburgh.
Windsor was previously only the Queen’s weekend home and her residence for Easter and Royal Ascot week in June.
Buckingham Palace has been the official royal residence since 1837. And, though the Queen will likely never reside there again, she will return there for festivities like the Platinum Jubilee, where she will appear on the balcony of the London residence on June 2.
According to the Sunday Times, Buckingham Palace is midway through a 10-year refurbishment and it is not practical for the Queen to return there.
A source said: “The reservicing does not end until 2027. While ongoing, it is not really a place to stay long-term.”
Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall are set to be the next royals to take up residence at Buckingham Palace.
Buckingham Palace has hosted many a famous face throughout the Queen’s reign. Receptions are held at the Palace throughout the year to recognise the work of industry, government, charities, sport, the Commonwealth and many more areas of life.
More than 50,000 people visit the Palace each year as guests to State banquets, lunches, dinners, receptions and garden parties.
