You may not think that Desperate Housewives could help be responsible for dramatically changing the way we view solar power. However it was on the old set on Wisteria Lane that Tesla CEO, Elon Musk chose to unleash his new brand of solar panel tiles.
Solar power is nothing new; what is new is having a product that is appealing and accessible to consumers. Musk outlined the challenge as having solar roofs look better than regular roofs, last longer, provide better insulation and have an installed cost that is less than a normal roof plus electricity. In conjunction with SolarCity, the new Tesla Solar Roof ticks all those boxes, as part of Tesla’s aim of transitioning the world to sustainable energy.
Virtually indistinguishable from regular roof tiles, the new Tesla solar tile appears like an ordinary roof from the viewpoint of the street. This is due to the tile’s special textured glass coating that becomes more or less see-through, depending on the view point. From the roof or a 90 degree angle, the underlying solar cell becomes more and more visible.
This means that the tile receives maximum exposure to sunlight, whilst still looking aesthetically pleasing to any viewer on the ground. What’s more, the glass make up of the tile was also shown to be much stronger than traditional materials like clay and slate.
Musk’s plan is to make solar technology the irresistible choice for future home owners. “It needs to be beautiful, affordable and seamlessly integrated,” explained Musk. “If all of those things are true, why would you go in any other direction?”
