This December, Coral Expeditions’ New Zealand series kicks off with the inaugural ‘An Expeditionary Voyage to Wallis & Futuna’. Departing from Cairns, Coral Adventurer will make its journey to the remote islands of Wallis and Futuna, located 2,000 nautical miles into the Pacific. The voyage offers intrepid explorers the opportunity to be one of few to set foot on these islands that are steeped in diverse history and rich culture.
Contested for centuries by the Tongans, English and French, Wallis and Futuna have a diverse mix cultural influences and traditions. As you step ashore on these wind-swept islands, you follow in the footsteps of ancient Fijian and Samoan traders, pioneering Dutch navigators, later English explorers and French missionaries. Uncover layers of cultural influences marked by ancient Polynesian thatch fale houses, the traditional kava drink and imposing Catholic Cathedrals.
Learn of Wallis’ historical ties with the Kingdom of Tonga – the only remaining kingdom in the Pacific since the late nineteenth century. Discover the longstanding catholic heritage of Futuna, which was home to the first canonised martyr in Oceania. With the company of historians on board, gleam fascinating insights as you encounter first hand the influence of the past on these isolated islands.
Celebrate Christmas onboard and steam further south to be the first to welcome in the New Year at sea before continuing onwards to Niue – one of the world’s largest coral atolls. Roll your watch back by 23 hours as you cross the International Date Line and conclude your adventure in Auckland basking in the Kiwi summer.
Coral Expeditions invites intrepid explorers on a voyage of discovery on their ‘An Expeditionary Voyage to Wallis & Futuna’ departing Cairns on 16 December 2022.

A Look Into Coral Expeditions’ History
Coral Expeditions is Australia’s pioneering cruise line, with a unique style of immersive expedition cruising focused on nature and culture. For almost four decades, Coral Expeditions has operated with a single purpose – to take small groups of like-minded explorers to remote places with expert guidance and warm Australian hospitality.
With humble beginnings of a single catamaran offering environmentally sensitive cruises on the Great Barrier Reef, their fleet now consists of 3 purpose-built blue water expedition ships – the intimate 72 guest Coral Discoverer and the 120 guest flagships Coral Adventurer and Coral Geographer. Each ship is designed specially to take guests to remote locations that large cruise ships simply cannot access.
The addition of their Xplorer tenders, the safari jeeps of the sea, allow for up close encounters with the nature of these hard-to-reach destinations.
