The six victims of the attack in a Sydney shopping centre have now been identified.

The shocking attack at Westfield Bondi Junction in Sydney’s east on Saturday claimed six lives.

Police have confirmed that five women and one man lost their lives when 40-year-old Joel Cauchi carried out the knife attack.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said about eight of those injured were also women.

Whether the attacker deliberately targeted women is “an obvious line of inquiry”.

“At this stage, we don’t know a motive. What we do understand, so far, is that there’s no ideological motivation,” she said.

“We do understand that there is a history of mental health but it will be the ongoing work of the investigators to determine what his activities were yesterday and the days before.”

Here’s what we know about the six victims.

Yixuan Cheng, 27

Yixuan Cheng, a Chinese national studying at the University of Sydney, was the sixth victim to be identified. It is believed she has no family in Australia and police spent Sunday trying to contact her family back home.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the unfortunate death of one Chinese student and the serious injury of another,” the Chinese embassy said in a statement.

“We extend our deep condolences to the victims and our heartfelt sympathies to their families, and wish early recovery to the injured.

“We will continue to maintain close communication with the Australian side and do our utmost to provide necessary assistance to the families of the Chinese victims.”

Pikria Darchia, 55

Darchia was an artist and mother of two, say reports. At the time of writing no further information had been released and her family have requested privacy.

Faraz Tahir, 30

Faraz was a security guard and refugee. The attack occurred on his first day working at Westfield. It is believed he was trying to stop the attacker.

“We are devastated by Faraz’s passing and recognise our team member’s bravery and role as a first responder,” centre owners Scentre Group Chief Executive Officer, Elliott Rusanow said in a statement.
“Another member of our security team was injured and remains in hospital.”

Ashlee Good, 38

Ashlee Good has been identified as the mother who lost her life as she tried to save her nine-month-old baby during the attack.

Good’s family released a statement saying they are “reeling” from the loss of “a beautiful mother, daughter, sister, partner, friend, all round outstanding human and so much more”.

The statement said the family is “struggling to come to terms with what has occurred”, and asked for peace and privacy.

Witnesses reported that Good, a first-time mother, threw her baby into the arms of bystanders in order to save her daughter’s life.

Good’s family thanked “the two men who held and cared for our baby when Ashlee could not – words cannot express our gratitude”.

Providing an update on the baby girl’s condition, the statement said she is doing well after hours of surgery on Saturday.

“We are so grateful for the expert care and attention of the medical team at Sydney Children’s Hospital,” the statement read.

Dawn Singleton, 25

Dawn Singleton, daughter of well-known advertising entrepreneur John Singleton, was the second victim to be named.

She was engaged to marry a NSW Police officer this year and had recently bought her wedding dress. She was reportedly shopping for makeup for her wedding when the attack occurred.

Her employer, White Fox Boutique, shared a statement to social media praising Singleton as a “sweet, kind-hearted person”.

Jade Young, 47

The third victim to be identified is Jade Young, an architect and mother of two girls from Bellevue Hill in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

Young was remembered as “much-loved” by the Bronte Surf Life Saving Club, of which she was an active member.

“Many club members will be affected by the loss of Jade and the impact of this senseless and tragic event will affect each of us differently over time,” the club said in an email to members.
