Skin Savours: Spices for Better Skin

These four herbs and spices, that are regular pantry staples, actually have more uses than you would have previously thought.

If you are looking to incorporate some natural remedies into your skin care regime then look no further than your kitchen cupboard.

Garlic

Garlic contains large amounts of allicin, known for its anti-fungal and anti-ageing properties. This small, yet powerful member of the onion family, also helps to increase the levels of antioxidants in our skin and prevent inflammation.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is well known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial properties and as such makes for a great spot treatment for any lumps or bumps that might be trying to make an appearance. Combine some Manuka honey and cinnamon powder to form a paste and dab on to your spot. Leave on for about 15 minutes, or until the paste has dried slightly, then rinse off.

Fennel

Not only is fennel a wonderfully cooling and delicious digestive aid, but this herb and its seeds, contain a vast array of vitamins and nutrients that are beneficial for skin health. If you suffer from slightly oily skin, then releasing some fennel seeds into hot water and letting steep until cool, makes for a seriously soothing toner. Just apply to a cotton ball and dab over the whole face, or just the affected areas and follow with your regular moisturiser.

Ginger

Ginger really is a wonderful ingredient. Not only does it assist with nausea, and help calm the stomach but it also wards of common colds and viruses and can even help soothe your inflamed skin.

Next time your face is red and sore from breakouts, try rubbing a piece of freshly cut ginger over the affected area to sooth inflammation and even out the skin tone.

Do you have any home-made remedies for your skin you would like to tell us about?
