Second death from COVID-19 in New Zealand

A woman in her 90s is the second person to die from COVID-19 related issues in New Zealand.

The woman was a resident of the Christchurch Rosewood rest home where a cluster had broken out.

Director of Public Health Caroline McElnay said that that the woman’s family was not able to be around her, but that “hospital staff were able to provide her with comfort and support, and we thank them for that.”

The woman was moved to Burwood Hospital from the rest home as part of a cluster management process.

The woman had age-related conditions prior to testing positive for the virus.

“This latest sad news reinforces the importance of our move to alert level four,” said Dr McElnay, “and the measures that we are all taking to limit the spread, break the chain of transmission and prevent deaths.”

The number of new cases of COVID-19 has risen to 44 today, bringing the total to 1,283.

“We are still generally heading in the right direction, and that’s very affirming. But it very much emphasises that we’re not out of the woods,” says Dr EcElnay. “We would expect to see numbers to go up and down in the immediate short-term.”
