Providing Shelter From the Storm

Providing Shelter From the Storm

How this community is looking after its animals will warm your heart.

Providing Shelter From the Storm

As most of Australia swelters through a heat wave, the worst snow storm in years hit Istanbul last week. Authorities are saying that it is one of the worst storms to hit the area since 2009, with almost 65cm of snow falling in parts of the city, cancelling flights and causing havoc on the roads.

To help combat the treacherous weather, local animal lovers have pulled together to help the stray animals of the city take shelter from the freezing temperatures. Local businesses are allowing the animals to sleep inside, in an effort to keep warm. Local shopkeeper Selçuk Bayal has transformed his small store as a temporary shelter for stray cats. “We are human, and these creatures are entrusted to us by God,” he told a local reporter. “We are responsible for looking after them.”

Other have also been laying down pieces of cardboard inside the local shopping centre for stray dogs and pups, covering them with blankets to keep them warm. The dogs were also provided with piles of food to ensure they did not go hungry.
