With a panel of 1,080 culinary experts, as well as a structured and audited voting procedure, the annual list is well regarded as being the definitive list of the world’s finest restaurants, in addition to being a barometer for global gastronomic trends. Two lists are released each year, the Top 50 and an extended lists of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants: 51 – 100.
Achieving 84th place on the annual longlist of venues is Andrew McConnell’s Melbourne CBD restaurant, Gimlet at Cavendish House. The only Australian restaurant to make the list, Gimlet opened in July 2020 mid pandemic, making it an especially impressive honour given Melbourne’s restaurants have been locked down for longer than any other city in Australia over the past two years.
Gimlet’s seasonal menu of classics – with exquisite details – like aged steak cooked over coals with French fries and its beautiful interior conversion of the impressive 1920s-era Cavendish House is well-deserved of its world recognition.
