Returning to Wairoa for Queen’s Birthday Weekend is the Wairoa Māori Film Festival. From film screenings to workshops, located in the heart of Wairoa, it’s a weekend not to miss.
Established in 2005, the festival celebrates Māori-made and themed films, alongside international indigenous films, especially those with a focus on the Pacific.
In true Māori spirit, guests are welcomed to the festival with a traditional powhiri, and are even given the option to stay and eat at the Marae. The weekend is packed with culture, entertainment, and even a touch of glamour; encouraging everyone to dress up in their finest to celebrate the dawn of Matariki. The Gaiety Theatre is also spreading its plumage, hosting a big part of the festival, with two days of screenings at the famous venue.
Join the stars and watch film magic unfold. There’s even an opportunity to take a dip in the local hot pools.
