Threapleton is set to star in an Apple TV+ adaptation of Edith Wharton’s novel, “The Buccaneers”. The role bears an uncanny resemblance to her mother’s first major breakthrough in the world of period dramas. Winslet initially caught the eye of audiences with her roles in “Heavenly Creatures” (1994) and “Sense and Sensibility” (1995). Nevertheless, it was her mesmerising performance in James Cameron’s iconic blockbuster “Titanic” (1997) that catapulted her to international stardom.
“The Buccaneers” promises to be a captivating watch. Threapleton stars alongside other talented actresses such as Imogen Waterhouse, sister to actress Suki Waterhouse, and rising star Kristine Froseth in the role of Nan St. George. Notably, Mad Men‘s Christina Hendricks plays Nan’s mother, adding to the stellar cast.
The eight-part series on screens November 8, 2023 boasts an all-female creative team. The series is set against the backdrop of the 1870s London season. It follows a group of young American girls as they venture to London in pursuit of titled husbands. It is a promising tale of romance, intrigue, and ambition.
A star is created
Threapleton’s journey into acting began in 2014 with her role in “A Little Chaos”. Followed by a part in the 2020 thriller drama, “Shadows.” However, it was her performance in the BAFTA-winning Channel 4 drama, “I Am Ruth,” alongside her mother in 2022, that truly brought her into the spotlight.
Winslet won the Leading Actress BAFTA for her performance and emotionally acknowledged her daughter’s dedication and talent, emphasising their shared achievement. She declared from the stage: ‘We did this together, kiddo!’
Threapleton’s audition for “I am Ruth” was entirely separate from her mother’s involvement, proving her worthiness for the role in the eyes of the production team. Producer Krish Majumdar praised Mia’s performance, emphasising that her selection was based solely on merit.
