If you're planning a visit to Paris, an extraordinary artistic journey awaits you at the Foundation Louis Vuitton.

From October 18, 2023, to April 2, 2024, the Foundation hosts a momentous exhibition that promises to be a cultural highlight of the year.

The exhibition in question is the first retrospective in France dedicated to the renowned artist Mark Rothko (1903-1970) since the remarkable showcase at the musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris back in 1999.

Curated with meticulous care, this retrospective brings together an impressive collection of approximately 115 artworks sourced from some of the world’s most prestigious international institutional and private collections. Among these cherished holdings are pieces from the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the artist’s own family, and the esteemed Tate Gallery in London.

What sets this exhibition apart is its meticulous chronological arrangement of Rothko’s works, which provides visitors with a unique opportunity to traverse the artist’s entire career. Beginning with his earliest figurative paintings and concluding with the abstract masterpieces that have immortalised his name in the annals of art history, this exhibit offers a comprehensive exploration of Rothko’s creative evolution.

As if the artistic journey itself wasn’t compelling enough, the setting for this exhibition adds an extra layer of significance. The works are displayed in the tallest room within the iconic Frank Gehry-designed building, sharing the space with Alberto Giacometti’s large-scale sculptural figures. This arrangement creates an environment that closely mirrors Rothko’s vision for a UNESCO commission that, sadly, never came to fruition.

So, if you find yourself in the City of Light during this exhibition’s run, be sure to set aside time for a mesmerising encounter with Mark Rothko’s exceptional body of work.

It’s an artistic voyage that promises not only to be visually captivating but also intellectually enriching, as you delve into the mind of an artist who has left an indelible mark on the world of art.
