Central Otago’s long-awaited Lake Dunstan Trail is now open

The Lake Dunstan Trail is the newest addition to Central Otago’s trail network, officially opening to the public this Saturday, 8 May 2021.

Traversing between Cromwell and Clyde, the 42 km trail winds along Lake Dunstan, Kawarau River and Clutha River Mata-au, taking you through Maori and pioneer heritage sights, Bannockburn’s beautiful vineyards, and over breathtaking swing bridges.

“Clever track design elements come together into a trail that adds yet another exciting dimension to the trail options in the region. You had to be in awe of the skill and attention to detail of the track designers and builders as they worked to build this wonderful asset for us all,” said Tourism Central Otago General Manager, Dylan Rushbrook.

Development of the track first began in May 2019, and since then, locals and visitors alike have been eagerly awaiting its opening.

The trail will officially be opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on 8 May, followed by an exclusive first-run with a group of riders and the general public. Continuing the celebrations, there will be live entertainment, street food and local wines at the Cromwell Heritage Precinct.
