What: Opening on Saturday 3 July at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, Slow Wonder reveals the boundless experimentation of New Zealand’s acclaimed conceptual artist Bill Culbert.

The exhibition offers a backstory for the artist’s investigations – while it acknowledges Culbert’s enduring curiosity with light, Slow Wonder also explores the deeper perceptual considerations within his work.

“Culbert’s audiences have been so enamoured with his light works that, ironically, these may have blinded us from a fuller appreciation of his practice,” says Auckland Art Gallery Curator, New Zealand Art, Julia Waite.

“Slow Wonder acknowledges the appeal of glowing bulbs, but the exhibition draws attention to the significant role of photography and the camera obscura, as well as to Culbert’s deft use of paradox and the underlying presence of scientific method.”

The show is part of Auckland Art Gallery’s drive to re-evaluate the work of significant New Zealand artists for younger generations, with Auckland Art Gallery Director Kirsten Lacy saying the exhibition “draws attention to the delicate rigour” of Culbert’s work”.
