A Legally Blonde spin-off TV series is in the works.

We now have official word about the upcoming series. At Amazon’s first-ever Upfront presentation in New York City today, Reese Witherspoon appeared on stage – dressed in Elle Woods’ signature pink garb and accompanied by Bruiser – to confirm the news.

Here’s what we know about the show so far.

The series is called Elle

Named after protagonist Elle Woods, of course!

It’s a prequel

The series follows Elle Woods as a high school student. We’ll learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film.

The original film’s star is on board as executive producer, along with Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky and Marc Platt. Fellow executive producer Laura Kittrell (High School, Insecure) is the show’s creator and showrunner.

“I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series! Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do,” Witherspoon says.

“What could be better than that?! I’m extremely grateful to the incredible teams at Prime Video and Hello Sunshine – along with our amazing writer Laura Kittrell – for making this dream of mine come true. Legally Blonde is back!”

Legally Blonde will have you laughing and crying

It will air on Amazon Prime Video

Prime Video ordered the Legally Blonde prequel from Reese Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine. The show will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries.

“One of the most quotable, iconic, and beloved characters that is ingrained in the fabric of Hollywood history has to be Elle Woods, and we are honoured to bring her origin story to our global Prime Video customers,” says Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios.

“Reese and Hello Sunshine’s vision for this series, coupled with Laura Kittrell’s winning voice, made this show completely undeniable.”

Another series also in development

It’s been reported that a second series is currently in the works. Deadline reports that the other offshoot is being written and executive produced by Gossip Girl developers/executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.

Legally Blonde 3 (still) in the works

Legally Blonde 3 has been in the works for several years. Witherspoon entered negotiations with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to produce and star in a third instalment of the film series in 2018. It was then announced the film would be released on 8 May 2020 – that day came and went, and later that month it was revealed that a brand new script for the film would be written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor. It’s been reported that Amazon, which acquired MGM, still has plans for the film to go ahead.
