The first part of the series, Trust, is an adaptation of Hernan Diaz’s novel of the same name set on Wall Street during the 1920s and 1930s. The second, The Palace, will focus on a single year inside an authoritarian regime as it begins to crumble.
Succession writer and executive producer Will Tracy created the original limited series, and Stephen Frears (The Queen, Sundance’s State of the Union) is set to direct.
The Academy Award-winning actress will star in both series of the political thrillers, as well as executive produce.
“We are honoured to be working with this incredibly talented group of filmmakers on The Palace,” HBO Executive Vice President of Programming Francesca Orsi said in a statement. “The notion that Kate Winslet and Stephen Frears, two of our industry’s leading lights (who – remarkably – have never collaborated before now), are joining forces to bring Will Tracy’s wildly original, prescient, and dazzling scripts to life at HBO is a dream come true for us.”
