Call My Agent

“If you love French movies, check out Call My Agent,” says Chief Sub Editor Gill Canning. “Focused on a bunch of cinematic agents with questionable morals who represent the likes of Isabelle Huppert, Juliette Binoche and Charlotte Gainsbourg, the series is fast-paced, clever and laugh-out-loud funny. Four seasons on Netflix with a fifth in the wings.”

Sweet Tooth

Based on the comic by Jeff Lemire and filmed in New Zealand, this fantasy drama follows a young ‘hybrid’ boy on an adventure in a post-apocalyptic world. “Sweet Tooth is amazing. So well done, original and interesting. Christian Convery is a great little actor, and so adorable,” says Art Director Nykke Coleman.

If you haven’t given in to the hype of Stranger Things yet, it’s the perfect entertaining binge. Love on the Spectrum

A heartwarming dating show that follows dating ups and downs of people on the autism spectrum, Love on the Spectrum is a real pick-me-up. “It pulls at the heart springs and you hope they all find love and happiness at some stage,” says Editor-in-Chief Michael McHugh.

Atypical

A sharp and engaging comedy, Atypical follows the story of Sam, a teen on the autism spectrum who sets out to find romance. Lead actor Keir Gilchrist’s has been commended for his sincere and vulnerable performance, with a perfect dose of whimsy.

Virgin River is far from boundary-breaking but its charming story, characters and setting make it a great Netflix escape. The show follows nurse, Melinda, as she moves from LA to the small town of Virgin River for a fresh start – and yes, there is a handsome love interest.

Sex Education

Gillian Anderson playing an impeccably dressed sex therapist in a bucolic English town, what more could you want? Sex Education is one of the best shows on Netflix right now, following teenager Otis Milburn who starts up a sex advice clinic, co-opting advice from his mother and sex therapist, played by Anderson. It’s the perfect balance of funny and quirky while tackling the universal problems surrounding sex.

Lupin

We can’t go past a good heist story and Lupin is filled with exciting twists and turns, along with a charming, handsome lead played by French actor Omar Sy. The French series was a breakout hit when it arrived on Netflix and with good reason – read our exclusive interview with Omar Sy here.

After Life

You might want to bring the tissues for this one. Created, directed and starring Ricky Gervais, this dark comedy follows a widower coping with the aftermath of his wife’s passing. It’s definitely a tearjerker, but manages to inject a wonderful dose of humour along with it.

Selling Sunset

Look, sometimes all you want is a bit of mindless reality TV and Selling Sunset perfectly fits the bill for a glitzy Netflix show to binge. The show, which follows the glamorous and drama-filled lives of Hollywood realtors, was a welcome escape from the lockdown blues when it landed last year. Along with the over-the-top characters and ridiculous drama, the show gives an inside look at the incredible multi-million dollar mansions of Los Angeles.

With the second season of Feel Good just landed, this is a great Netflix hidden gem to binge-watch. The show follows comedian recovering drug addict Mae Martin and newly-out girlfriend George as they navigate their new relationship and Martin’s history of addiction. “It’s the perfect combination of quirky, charming and sentimental – plus it’s only 6 episodes long making it a perfect Netflix show to binge,” says Staff Writer Kathryn Chung.

Unorthodox

“Unorthodox is a must-watch, weekend binge,” says Integration Director Lillian McHugh. Roughly based on Deborah Feldman’s autobiography, Unorthodox tells the story of a young Jewish woman who flees her arranged marriage and Ultra-Orthodox community. “Shira Haas is absolutely incredible,” she says. “I didn’t want the series to finish, four episodes was not enough!”
