What: The work of abstract pioneer Hilma af Klint is set to go on display at City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi from December.
The Secret Paintings will bring the work of the renowned Swedish artist to New Zealand for the first time.
The exhibition will present more than 100 paintings, including The Ten Largest which tower at more than three metres tall.
Af Klint’s works were inspired by both the spiritualist and scientific practices of her time. She saw herself as a receiver of messages for humanity from the spirits and conveyed her visions in her paintings.
Born in Stockholm in 1862, af Klint was one of the first women to study painting at the city’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts, graduating with honours in 1887.
Very few of the works to be presented in The Secret Paintings were presented during af Klint’s lifetime. Af Klint believed the world wasn’t ready for her work, and left instructions that her work be kept secret until at least 20 years after her death.
