Watch the new Taika Waititi movie trailer ‘JoJo Rabbit’ an anti-hate satire about Hitler

New Zealand filmmaker, Taika Waititi, whose credits include Thor: Ragnarock and Hunt For The Wilderpeople, has released the new trailer for his upcoming movie JoJo Rabbit.

The minute-long clip gives audiences their first glimpse of Taika Waititi as a self-described “weird version” of Adolf Hitler, alongside a star-studded cast.

His signature style of humour and pathos shines through in JoJo Rabbit, a World War II satire that follows a lonely German boy (Roman Griffin Davis as JoJo) whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi), Jojo must confront his blind nationalism.

Waititi has adapted the screenplay from the 2008 international best-seller Caging Skies, by Christine Leunens. The novel, a dark comedy, tells the story of Johannes, a young and enthusiastic member of the Hitler Youth who discovers that his parents are keeping a big secret.

The director – whom the trailer deems a “visionistical director” – has built his career around off-kilter narratives that seek to upend prejudices and tell stories about underdogs and outsiders through comedy. This film seems no different.

In cinemas on Boxing Day 2019.
