Watch: ‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ Teaser Trailer Released

The Crawley family's return to the big screen will be an emotional occasion, according to the just-released trailer.

Downton fans can prepare to enter 1930, as the final installment of the franchise is set to hit theatres this September.

The first teaser trailer for the film ‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,’ reveals the family are readying to enter a new chapter as they also enter a new decade.

While there a few overall storyline details revealed, montage scenes show the beloved cast of characters returning and hints at some emotional moments that await.

The trailer begins as the family gathers at a racetrack, where Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) welcomes everyone in attendance to 1930. A further clip shows Michelle Dockery’s Lady Mary in London, donning the new fashions of the era – a glamourous red gown similar to that seen in the film’s official poster.  The family also gathers at the Downton Estate, and Lady Mary gazes poignantly at a portrait of Violet Crawley (previously played by the late Maggie Smith) .

Violet Crawley, The Dowager Countess, passed away in the second movie, 2022’s ‘Downton Abbey: A New Era, and following Smith’s own passing in September 2024 at the age of 89, the final film has become all that more moving for the cast and fans.

Michelle told Collider: “It’s a beautiful film. For us, it was such a treat to be able to come back together again. It’s a real tribute to Maggie Smith, the film.”

Much of the main cast will return for the third installment in the Downton Abbey franchise, including Dockery,  Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern and Laura Carmichael.

Downton Abbey followed the aristocratic Crawley family for six seasons on television between 2010 to 2015, then two previous films, 2019’s Downton Abbey and 2022’s Downton Abbey: A New Era, continued the franchise.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale hits cinemas on 11 September 2025.
