Rosamund Pike takes the reins in black comedy I Care a Lot, and the British actress relished the opportunity to play a ruthlessly ambitious character.
Pike plays Marla Grayson, a professional, court-appointed guardian who seizes assets from her elderly wards through dubious means.
The star told MiNDFOOD it was “really fun” to be able to play a “dazzlingly bad” character, especially when such roles are usually reserved for men.
“Anti-heroes who are ruthless, ambitious, shameless, dreadful, dastardly, corrupt – something about the pizzazz and the chutzpah with which they go about their devious ways is really fun to watch, and those characters have never really come around for women,” she says.
“I remember watching The Wolf of Wall Street with Leonardo DiCaprio and thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, what would it be like if a woman got the chance to play a role like that, with all the bad behaviour and all the scheming and the planning and the brilliance of design?’ And then here comes I Care a Lot, and I thought, ‘Wow, this is it.’”
