Flash of blue at Zambesi

Zambesi's sporty collegiate club of black and blue walked to the Flash Gordon soundtrack during last night's 35th anniversary show at New Zealand Fashion Week.

The punchy soundtrack to science fiction film Flash Gordon (1980) set the tone for Zambesi’s autumn/winter 15 collection show held late last night at New Zealand Fashion Week.

The show’s late start at 10.20pm (show time was scheduled for 8.45pm) was out of Zambesi’s control due to an earlier show running extremely late but that did not put off Zambesi’s diehard fans.

The collection was big on black, of course, but heavily punctuated with a bright “Royal” blue that designers Elisabeth Findlay and Dayne Johnston became “obsessed with” and you can see why.

The blue was used for suiting, knitwear, footwear and elastic trims used to accent accessories including a quilted PVC backpack that can also be carried as a tote.

Roman numerals XXV were a strong theme throughout the collection to celebrate Zambesi’s 35th birthday year – jacquarded into mohair and “cashmere-feel” blankets made from New Zealand possum, merino and silk which were artfully worn across the shoulders for the runway presentation.

The label has also collaborated again with Liberty, using a beautiful blue and charcoal landscape print in cotton voile for shirting.

Accessories included Zambesi’s latest eyewear designs which arrived from London just in time for the show.

The overall feeling – futuristic minimal sporty collegiate.
