The public has gotten a first look at the western ‘Rust’, starring Alec Baldwin, the controversial film that led to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
‘Rust’ stars Alec Baldwin as an outlaw in 1880s Kansas who breaks his young grandson out of jail and takes him on the run, after he accidentally kills a rancher who is sentenced to hang.
‘As they flee across the unforgiving wilderness, the fugitive pair must outrun the determined U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (played by Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter named “Preacher” (Travis Fimmel)’, a description of the film accompanying the trailer reads.
The film was in production when the fatal on-set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins took place on Oct. 21, 2021, the on-set accident leading to charges against Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed. A judge dismissed the involuntary manslaughter charge against Baldwin last year on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to turn over evidence. However, Gutierrez Reed is serving an 18-month sentence for Hutchins’ death, after it was determined that a live bullet had been loaded into Baldwin’s prop gun.
According to Variety, “Rust” first premiered at Poland’s Camerimage Festival in November 2024, with director Joel Souza and Bianca Cline, who took over cinematography duties following Hutchins’ death, in attendance. Baldwin was not invited to the event.
The film is expected to be released in select theaters and video-on-demand on May 2, 2025.
