The 20th Sydney Writers’ Festival runs May 22 to May 28. Tied together by the theme of “refuge”, it offers 400 events with over 450 writers across greater Sydney. Free events make up approximately 40% of the program.
Artistic Director Michaela McGuire said at the launch of the program, “Across the 2017 Festival, some of the world’s most curious and compassionate, irreverent but respectful, intelligent and argumentative writers will be offering up their brilliant works as temporary respite, and interrogating the forces that compel us to come together and find sanctuary.”
More than 400 Australian authors from across the country are featured. They appear alongside some key international acts such as feminist writer Roxane Gay, George Saunders, Pulitzer prize-winning journalists and authors, Susan Faludi and Thomas Friedman, along with many others.
Families are invited to participate in the festival, with the whole of Walsh Bay’s Pier 4/5 being converted into a children’s book wonderland on May 28.
