Post House
The Post House has
restrained clubbiness and charm in equal measure, professional service
and really good beefsteaks – the New York strip on the bone, for one,
is superb.
This is not the place for breakout culinary notions
but for the beloved predictables: crab cakes and clams on the half
shell to start or the so-retro and so-good iceberg lettuce under a
creamy blue cheese dressing; sides include perfectly simple sautéed
spinach, onion rings and hash browned potatoes.
The Post House
surf and turf, a 10-ounce lobster tail paired with a 10-ounce filet
mignon will satisfy the most intense protein lust.
There is
fresh fish, listed daily – the Dover sole with hollandaise is a
textbook exercise.
The reasonable wine list leans towards American
labels. If the go-to-hell steak house spirit prevails to dessert time,
the menu will not disappoint.
When did you last encounter
banana cream pie? Or coconut cake? Alternatively, the more restrained
lemon tart, not too sweet, topped with a tender dollop of meringue,
might strike just the right note.

Peter Luger Steak House
Peter Luger appears relentlessly as number one on most lists of New York’s best steak restaurants.
There are a few other beefy options, but the star here is the porterhouse, charred on the outside, rosy within.
Begin with sliced tomatoes and onions if tomatoes are in season, or Caesar salad.
Surround the steak with baked or fried potatoes and creamed spinach and finish with cheese cake.
Lugar
is more than 100 years old and if it has been redecorated often, it is
not apparent; along with the theatrically gruff wait staff, that is its
appeal.

BLT Steak
The
hanger and ribeye steaks are our favourites. There are other meats –
veal chop, rack of lamb and even fish – but that’s not why we go.
What sets BLT apart from traditional steak houses are the side dishes, which are listed daily on a board.
Grilled asparagus, creamy spinach, whatever mushrooms are in season, and potato gratin are terrific.
You can bring along a vegetarian friend who will be very happy indeed with a meal composed of options for the flesh-averse.
