It’s becoming more and more apparent that Hollywood can’t get enough of Rebel Wilson. The Aussie actress who shot to international fame in the hit comedy Bridesmaids before the more recent musical Pitch Perfect is growing a legion of fans faster than any Australian comedy export we can recall.
During the recent MTV Music Awards, the first-time host paraded an impressive number of wardrobe changes ranging from an Iron Magenta suit, to a black leather full body suit.
“But I’m just a fat, simple girl from Australia,” Wilson fired early on in the night. “The only thing I’ve hosted is this parasitic worm. I’m still not sure which hole it came out of.”
The awards show has been hailed as the “raunchiest” to date, thanks to Wilson’s healthy splattering of pubic hair jokes and references to Channing Tatum’s privates (she also had a stuffed koala for the duration of the show, oddly named ‘Chlamydia’.)
One of the more impressive skills we saw on display was Wilson’s ability to dish out some harsh celebrity quips… and get away with them.
“I am quite surprised they asked me to host,” she announced. “So is MTV. They though I was Adele.”
In contrast, earlier this year Joan Rivers received hefty criticism for making a weight joke about the Someone Like You singer. Which begs the question: as a plus-size entertainer, can she get away with more?
Jokes and parodies aside (one of our favourite Rebel moments was her awesome musical medley featuring Miley Cyrus’ The Climb, Enimem’s Lose Yourself and Alicia Keys’ Girl on Fire), Wilson’s Aussie-rooted, insanely energetic and side-splittingly hilarious delivery has been named the highlight of the evening by both stars and the American media.
All that, and she herself even picked up two awards for Breakthrough Performance and Musical Moment.
“If you’ve enjoyed the show, I’ve been Rebel Wilson,” the actress said, closing out the night.
“If you haven’t, I have been Jonah Hill in a wig.”
