‘I’m a survivor, there’s no question about that’: Melissa George

Australian actress Melissa George has said she is “a survivor” during an interview with MiNDFOOD to promote her upcoming TV series The Mosquito Coast.

Based on the best-selling book by Paul Theroux, The Mosquito Coast follows the dangerous journey of a radical idealist and brilliant inventor, Allie Fox (Justin Theroux), who uproots his family for Mexico when they suddenly find themselves on the run from the US government.

George plays Fox’s wife Margot in the drama, and the actress says she relates to the character’s strength in her fight for survival.

“I’m a survivor, there’s no question about that,” George says.

“I’ve seen the worst of life and the best of life I would say.”

Those who have followed George’s career will be familiar with highs and lows in her life that have played out in the public eye, with the latter including her recent acrimonious divorce and custody battle.

Playing a character with a propensity for survival inspired George to give the role “everything that I have left”.

“I think by sitting on the script of Mosquito Coast for that many months allowed me to figure out that if I’m going to play Margot, I’m going to play her with absolutely everything that I have left, just give it my all,” she says.

“It was a lesson to me to not just take role after role after role after role and just be so ambitious that you’ve got to leave your own personal life behind.

“I didn’t do that, this is my first big role back and sometimes when you wait, good things come. You’ve just got to sit tight.”
