Tutti frutti

Trying to understand Miuccia Prada's fascination with banana earrings is a complex matter.

Late last year when, Miuccia Prada unveiled her spring / summer 2011 collection in Milan, she took to wearing dangling banana earrings.  Ever the connoisseur of kitsch Prada can get away with such costume attire, but what about he rest of use? Can we really wear DayGlo orange, shocking pink, bright green, fat stripes and, yes, banana print skirts and earrings out and about?

While Prada talked about her fascination with the baroque and the way that it undulated from Sicily to South America, I can’t help but associate banana prints and accessories with Josephine Baker and thus cringe at the thought of stepping out looking like an American tourist in Costa Rica.

Perhaps the trick is to not jump into the fruit cocktail with both feet. When Prada hosted a grand dinner at historic Lancaster House in St James in December 2010, she wore a silver pleated midi-skirt from Miu Miu’s spring/summer 2011 collection and a white T-shirt from Prada with her favourite banana earrings.  Here’s the lesson: less is more in the complex world of fashion.
