Skin Care Tool Kit

By Clare Dickens

In order to maintain or improve the quality of your skin you need the right tools. Here are a few simple tips to get your skin looking healthy and glowing for summer.

Cleanser and toner

To ensure your skin is clear of makeup and impurities, use a cleansing product suitable for your skin type. A milky lotion feels soothing and cool on sensitive or dehydrated skin, a rich cream comforts dry skin while a gel refreshes oily or combination skin. Ensure you cleanse twice. The first application removes the superficial makeup, dirt and grime collected from our polluted environment; the second cleans the skin.

Don’t miss the second step: toner. Not only does toner make the skin feel fresh, it ensures all the cleanser has been removed. Cleansers are designed to attract particles and can leave a film; therefore, it is important to make sure they have been removed properly.

Eye cleanser

The skin around the eyes is more delicate than the rest of the face, and stubborn makeup can dictate the need for special attention. Choose an eye make-up remover that will cope with the demands of your make-up – mascara in particular. Gently massage a small amount into the eye contour while your eye is closed and then remove with a damp cotton pad. Use a separate pad for each eye to prevent cross-infection.

Eye cream or gel

Puffiness, dark circles or wrinkles?

Eye gels are invigorating and feel refreshing in the morning. They are best for relief of tired, heavy eyes and to help improve micro-circulation.

If it is anti-ageing you are most concerned with, choose a creamy texture. A specialised eye cream will be finer in texture than your moisturiser and will deliver rejuvenation where you need it.

Make sure you only apply cream equal to the size of a grain of rice to the eye contour bone. By creating a reservoir of product around the eye, the natural movement will draw in the ingredients as required without the eyes becoming puffy.

Apply your eye product prior to your moisturiser. This will protect the eye area from the more dense textures of day and night creams.

Day cream

Selected for your skin type, day creams will treat your immediate concerns as well as offering protection against external aggravators: weather, pollution, air conditioning, heating etc. Choose a texture that absorbs into the skin quickly, leaving you with comfortable skin and a flawless base for make-up and/or sun protection.

Night cream

The skin cells repair and regenerate at night, therefore a night cream is generally more concentrated and often has a slightly richer texture. Apply your night cream once you have arrived home for the evening and give your skin a head start to looking radiant in the morning.

Facial exfoliant

To ensure your products are able to perform at their best, incorporate an exfoliator into your routine once or twice a week. By sloughing off dead cells, the natural regeneration process is stimulated and the skin feels smoother. A more even texture improves radiance and allows your skin to benefit from other products’ active ingredients.

Mask

Whether your skin is dry, tired, ageing or oily, use a mask after exfoliation. This will revive your skin and act as a top-up in between professional treatments.

Sunblock

A must for protection against the damaging effects of the sun’s rays and vital to any anti-ageing skincare regimen. Apply sunblock after your day cream for the perfect make-up base.
