Hair S.O.S

By Milly Nolan

Beauty Editor, Milly Nolan, enters hair rehab after receiving an unfavourable diagnosis from the experts behind Kerastase Paris on the health of her hair.

Since I was a child my hair has had a mind of its own. Without intending to I have gone through more hairstyles than Victoria Beckham. Until the age of three my hair was very blonde, straw like and completely uncontrollable. No matter how much grooming my Mother tried to inflict on my hair, there was no taming it.

Next came the cute ringlets that I would have been happy to have had forever, but this was not meant to be. The next style, slightly wavy, reasonably thick and with an impressive cowlick remained for most of junior school. High school was where the damage began as I started to highlight my increasingly mousy-brown hair and blow-dry it straight daily.

University saw the obsession with hair-straighteners and voila before I knew it my hair had changed again to very fine hair that was susceptible to breaking, frizzing and fly-away strands.

Today, my hair is not much better and remains the bane of my life. While it does go through phases of being presentable and manageable, I have finally admitted what no beauty editor ever wants to admit: my hair needs help. It is time I paid as much attention to my hair as I do to my skin.

I put in a plea of help to the experts behind the professional haircare brand Kerastase Paris so that they could diagnose the condition of my hair and recommend a Kerastase haircare regimen that would transform my unhealthy hair into flowing, desirable locks in no time.

The Visual Diagnosis

Here is the brutal part. My hair was diagnosed by Nigel Lutty, technical manager for Kerastase as dry, over-coloured, chemically bruised and therefore extremely porous and prone to breaking and split-ends. In short, my hair was in dire need of some T.L.C.

The Prescription

1 A Kerastase Paris Kerathermie treatment: A heat activated reconstruction ritual for dry, damaged and rebellious hair.

2 Kerastase Resistance: double reconstructing treatments that transform and protect weakened hair from core to surface.

  • Kerastase Bain de Force (RRP $33): A cream-gel shampoo to gently restore strength and resistance to damaged or weakened hair.
  • Kerastase Ciment Anti-Usure (RRP $40): A rinse out conditioner to strengthen weak, damaged hair and to give it a smooth, shiny and even texture.
  • Kerastase Forcintense (RRP $56): A weekly two-step reinforcing and resurfacing take home treatment programme for weak and damaged hair.
  • Kerastase Ciment Thermique (RRP $40): A heat-activated, leave-in reconstructing milk designed to be used with heat styling tools.

3 Kerastase Soleil: protection and repair products for sun-exposed and sun-damaged hair.

  • Kerastase Soleil Voile Protecteur (RRP$36): A light UV-protection spray for colour-treated hair. It provides anti-humidity protection, long-lasting shine and leaves hair feeling silky smooth.
  • Kerastase Soleil Bain Après Soleil (RRP$33): This shampoo proetcets against sun and environmental exposure and reconstitutes the hair fibre’s surface and structure. Hair is left feeling supple with longer lasting colour radiance.
  • Kerastase Soleil Masque UV Défense (RRP $58): A replenishing masque to nourish and preserve colour-treated hair while protecting it from UV damage.

Stay tuned for my next blog, which will reveal how my hair SOS trial went and whether the Kerastase treatment and products made a difference.

In the meantime if you have any hair tips or remedies for damaged hair like mine, I would love to hear them and put them to the test.
