The best fish and chips in town

By Dixie Eilliott

Fish and chips is not an easy meal to get right so when I find a place that does it well I'm in heaven, writes Dixie Elliott in her MiNDFOOD blog.

I just love fish and chips. It doesn’t matter who you talk to, everyone has an opinion about where you get the best fish and chips.

Some people like big, fat moist chips, others like them crunchy while some prefer shoestrings. But when it comes to the fish, most people insist on crisp batter.

Crisp batter is not an easy thing to get right and restaurants or shops that can produce it are usually the busy ones.

In Sydney, my favourite place for fish and chips is Fishface on Darlinghurst Road. Their fish and chips can’t be beaten. Served in a cone and placed in a contraption to hold them upright, the meal then resembles a 50s sci-fi rocketship.

They are always delicious with lovely hand cut chips, tasty tartare sauce and the freshest flathead.

In Dunedin, The Best Café is my favourite place for fish and chips. My family take me there when I visit and it is always fantastic. It’s like stepping back in time – linoleum floors, plastic tablecloths, and the bread comes buttered and cut into little triangles.

When I go to The Best Café I am in heaven. Their menu always has what is in season so, depending when you are there, it could be Bluff oysters or whitebait you eat.

When I was a child, my parents would take us on wonderful trips to Christchurch to see live shows. Part of the package included a visit to Fails Fish Café.

The café had metal art deco style seats in the shape of a fish with marble-top tables. Apparently the café was demolished some years ago. Their fish and chips were fantastic. Perhaps this is where my love of fish and chips came from.

Where is your favourite fish and chips restaurant or take-away? Go on, spill the beans!
