Dancing in the sky

Dancing in the sky

I love how Air NZ has kept the lolly service on flights, handing them out to passengers as the flight begins to land: a throwback to my childhood and a fond memory. I don’t think I ever got asked to hand the lollies out when I was a kid. I quite liked the possibility of handing them out, especially considering the the bag of lollies you were given after the task was completed.  Is there anything worse than having mid air envy, while travelling on an aircraft?

I’m not talking about those lucky paying customers in the roomer cabins at the front end of the aircraft in first, business or premium. What I’m referring to is plain old economy envy. There’s nothing worse than when you are watching a movie you aren’t dedicated to, when out of the corner of your eye you spy a TV screen further up the aisle with something that looks much more entertaining. Or a magazine feature that looks more interesting than the copy you are holding. I have been known to turn my screen off after the frustration of not being able to find the same program and just sit there in silence.

But I have just discovered how to use my very own playlist onboard. How long has this mid air invention been there for us all to use? It is the first thing I do once I get my earphones on. There is nothing like being your own DJ on a flight. I return to all my own favourites as a child, yes The Bee Gees, Abba, Duran Duran, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac… it takes me back to times in my life when I danced like no one was looking, and when I thought I was the next John Travolta strutting my stuff at the St Marys Form One and Two social. The only embarrassing part is when the constant toe tapping and finger strumming turns into more of a shoulder roll move and head twist. Slightly embarrassing but hey, let the playlist begin!
