World Suicide Prevention Day 2017

World Suicide Prevention Day 2017
Join World Suicide Prevention Day and "take a minute, change a life."

In recent years we have become more aware of the dark reality of suicide in Australia and New Zealand. Horrifying statistics reveal that the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15-44 is suicide – and in New Zealand, suicide rates are at an all-time high with 606 deaths in 2017 attributed to the cause.

Depression can be difficult to spot, but it’s important to remember that what is seen on the surface doesn’t necessarily align with what is going on inside. A study conducted by Australian National Youth Mental Health Foundation Headspace found that over 70% of Australian students had low moods and over 50% felt worthless.

In an effort to change these facts and help those that are struggling with mental health issues, World Suicide Prevention Day is encouraging people to reach out to those around them. By listening to someone who is feeling vulnerable, there is a chance you can alter their sense of hopelessness. “Letting it out and getting it out can change everything,” says international speaker and co-creator of Access Consciousness Dr Dain Heer.

Take part in World Suicide Prevention Day this September and ask a friend or stranger how they are doing.

World Suicide Prevention Day 2017 is on September 10th. Visit iasp.info for more details.
