World-first Art installation to illuminate Uluru
One of the world’s most breathtaking natural wonders is set to host a monumental art show.

Bruce Munro’s Field of Light artwork will come to Ayers Rock Resort in 2016. The installation will be appear in its largest form to date in the spiritual heartland of Australia. The solar-powered installation will be the largest of its kind, anywhere in the world.

It was inspired by Australia’s red heart so its only fitting it should finally be seen there. The concept first came to Bruce Munro while visiting Uluru in 1992, but it wasn’t until 2004 that the installation first came into fruition at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and in Munro’s own hometown in south-west England.

‘Field of Light was one idea that landed in my sketchbook and kept on nagging at me to be done,” said Bruce. “I saw in my mind a landscape of illuminated stems that, like the dormant seed in a dry desert, quietly wait until darkness falls, under a blazing blanket of southern stars, to bloom with gentle rhythms of light,” he said. “Field of Light is a personal symbol for the good things in life.”

The dazzling installation has travelled widely since then, appearing at sites across the United Kingdom, the United States and Mexico.

Munro and his team will install more than 50,000 slender stems crowned with radiant frosted-glass spheres to fill the desert’s vast scale. The coloured spheres, connected via illuminated optical fibre, are set to bloom as darkness falls over Australia’s breathtaking red centre.

Pathways will direct viewers into the installation, which will come to alive beneath a brilliant, starry sky.

The exhibition opens on 1 April 2016, and will run until 31 March 2017.
