The Ultimate Winter Hair Care Routine
With winter rapidly approaching, it's time to give your locks some love. International hairdressing maestro Gianni Scumaci shares his top tips for caring for hair in the colder months.

Winter is well on its way, meaning it’s time to prepare your locks for the chilly season ahead. We caught up with hairdressing expert Gianni Scumaci, who worked with the Joico brand globally for many years, to discuss the dos and don’ts of winter hair care.

What are some ways we should think about adjusting our haircare and styling routine for the colder months?

Be aware of the condition of your hair. Talk to your hairdresser about what shampoo and conditioner would work best not just for styling but also to protect the hair shaft with the changing weather. Also be aware that the hair has often had a lot of sun and sea salt during the summer period and how the material and fabrics of hats and scarves can affect the hair cuticle during winter months.

I find my hair tends to get very dry over the winter months. Why does this happen and how can I rectify this?
Make a really good and informed choice on the right hair product and be aware of how close you use the hairdryer ( if you use one) to dry the hair as we tend to use heat tools more in the winter.

Does coloured hair need extra attention and care throughout winter? What products do you recommend and why?
Yes, coloured treated hair needs more attention particularly through themed length and ends. Depending on your hair density and texture I would recommend a good leave-in conditioning treatment as this can help restore the elements to the hair structure protecting it from ageing and heat damage.

Top hair products this winter

1. The treatment: Joico K-PAK Intense Hydrator ($33); 2. The wash: Joico K-PAK Shampoo and Conditioner ($33 each); 3. The styling oil: Joico K-PAK Color Therapy Restorative Styling Oil ($33); 4. The texturiser: Joico Hair Shake ($34).
