Your rundown of the passion, controversy and what to expect from the 88th Academy Award Ceremony this Sunday.

Leo wants gold…badly

Peggy Siegal is considered somewhat of a Hollywood oracle, she is a publicist who works with the biggest film producers in the business. If you want to know where to place your bets on an award winner, she is your woman.

In a story doing the rounds, Siegal recalls an encounter with Dicaprio at a party in St. Barth’s:

DiCaprio “Siegal, who’s going to win the Oscars? I have to call my bookie.”
Siegal “Well, Julianne Moore is going to win for her fourth nomination.”
DiCaprio “When am I going to win? I’ve had four nominations.”
Siegal “When you’re in a wheelchair you’ll get the Irving Thalberg award.”

He was purportedly not too happy about that.

A year later…

Siegal “It’s your year, you’re winning. You’ve got to do the campaigning, you’ve got to go to the mats because you’re going to win.”

A web video game parodying the plight of poor Leo was created called Leo’s Red Carpet Rampage, players can help Leo on his quest for the Oscar.

#OscarsSoWhite

Of the twenty nominees for an academy award not one is of colour, this has been the case for two years running. The academy is being blamed for the prejudice, with protesters claiming that the mere 2% of votes being cast by African Americans makes for an imbalanced judgement. This issue has gathered so much momentum that a bonus game was added to Leo’s Red Carpet Rampage called ‘Find the black nominee’, satirising the situation.

Host and presenters

Comedian Chris Rock will host the ceremony with presenters such as Cate Blanchett, Emily Blunt, Louis C.K., Steve Carell, Tina Fey and Ryan Gosling. Rock is in a unique position in the midst of a racial debate, will he and or how will the host navigate the controversy?

Red Carpet style predictions

Bold reds, leather and black dominated the 2016 BAFTAs this month, while the SAG Awards saw a little more colour. If the Golden Globes is anything to go by, we should be seeing some classic rich colours and forms.

Power couple to watch: This awards season Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender have been the most looked out for, particularly for their impeccable and easy style.
