Who did Australians Google in 2019?
As the year draws to a close, Google has revealed which Australians were most searched by the nation in 2019.

From politicians to pop stars, here are this year’s top 10 most Googled Australians:

  1. Ash Barty

The tennis player was catapulted to stardom when she won her first grand slam title at the French Open this year. She’s the first Australian to win the tournament in singles since Margaret Court in 1973. Her down-to-earth demeanour and ability to sneak Disney lyrics into media conferences cemented her position as Australia’s favourite tennis player.

  1. Fraser Anning

The former Queensland senator shocked Australians with his offensive response to the Christchurch terror attacks, in which he blamed Muslim immigration for the shootings. No doubt Google searches would have increased after so-called ‘Egg Boy’ slammed an egg onto Anning’s head in response to the comments.

  1. Israel Folau

He’s just walked away from a bitter termination dispute with a reported multi-million-dollar payout, after Rugby Australia sacked him from the Wallabies for his controversial social media posts saying homosexuals, among others, would go to hell. Folau most recently caused another stir when he said the current bushfires were God’s punishment for legalising abortion and same-sex marriage.

  1. Cody Simpson

Once considered Australia’s answer to Justin Bieber, Simpson had been out of the headlines for some time. He made a surprise return to the spotlight in Australia after he appeared on hit show The Masked Singer, and his romance with singer Miley Cyrus has propelled his international stardom.

  1. Scott Morrison

In a federal election year, it’s no surprise the prime minister took out one of the most Googled spots. After years of polling predicted Labor would return to power, Morrison shocked most of Australia by managing to hold onto his position as PM on May 18.

  1. Bill Shorten

One of the least popular opposition leaders in recent memory, Shorten said goodbye to being head of the Labor party after overwhelming defeat by the Coalition in the election.

  1. Jack Vidgen

Having won Australia’s Got Talent in 2011, Vidgen shocked viewers when he made a return to television on The Voice this year with a completely different look, thanks to what appeared to be multiple cosmetic procedures.

  1. George Pell

The disgraced cardinal was sentenced to six years in prison for historical child sex offences, found guilty of five charges related to sexual assault of two boys in the 1990s. He was Australia’s highest-ranking Catholic.

  1. Tayla Harris

The AFL player found herself the victim of sexual online trolling after a photograph of her high-kicking a goal during a match was posted on social media. A bronze statue immortalising the image has since been unveiled at Federation Square in Melbourne.

  1. Chris Lilley

The comedian made a return to our screens with his highly-anticipated new mockumentary series Lunatics. The series sparked controversy before it was released due to speculation he was in blackface to play South African character Jana, who turned out to be a white woman with a spray tan.
