Researchers from the university in Sydney took videos using an LED lighting system with a high speed camera to show what happens when you talk, cough and sneeze in different scenarios.
The footage shows the difference between not wearing a mask, wearing two different types of cloth masks or wearing a surgical mask.
The three-layered surgical mask was found to be the most effective at blocking droplets and aerosols from talking, coughing and sneezing.
The two different cloth masks were made from DIY templates provided online – one had a single layer of cloth and the other had two layers.
The single-layer cloth face covering reduced the droplet spread but was not as effective as the two-layered cloth mask.
While the researchers didn’t test more than two layers, generally more layers are considered to offer better protection.
