What’s All The Fuss About Vitamin C?
Vitamin C has far more benefits than simply boosting our immune system. MiNDFOOD reports.

From our early years we were encouraged to eat our fruit and veggies to stay healthy. Little did we know at this age that it would also help keep us looking young. Vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid) has far more benefits than simply boosting our immune system. It helps our bodies produce collagen, a natural protein responsible for our youthful plump complexion and the main component of our tendons and cartilage.

Every day our skin is exposed to environmental elements; sunlight, smoke and air pollution which cause free radicals (unstable organic molecules, which look to bond with stable molecules) to form in the skin. This destructive attack is a normal process but in the skin can cause unnecessary damage. The anti-oxidant properties of Vitamin C neutralise these free radicals and increase our natural protection against harmful effects of UV rays.

Whilst increasing the amount of Vitamin C consumed in our diets is one approach, local application ensures the ‘goodness’ gets to where it is required. The skin, along with the hair and nails are the last in line, after the vital organs, to receive nutrients in the blood from our diet. This coupled with the fact that our body’s own control system regulates the levels absorbed and excretes any excess in our urine reiterates the need for a localised application.

Science shows that topical application of Vitamin C is one of the most effective ways to prevent premature ageing and environmental damage to your skin. This power-packed natural remedy is a best friend to all skin types due to its countless benefits. During the warmer months when sun exposure is inevitable, Vitamin C inhibits the tyrosinase enzyme which causes pigmentation, making it a must for anyone concerned with age spots. It also has a mild anti-inflammatory effect and hydrates the epidermis, both of which aid in the recovery of summer skin concerns.

Vitamin C has a desquamating effect. This accelerated natural skin shedding process assists in the evening out of the complexion encouraging a smoother, more refined skin, whilst dull skin is lightened and brightened. As the skin is encouraged to shed more rapidly there are also regenerative benefits. The healing process is improved and the appearance of scar tissue is reduced.

Vitamin C is one of the building blocks required to produce collagen. With direct application of this liquid gold, collagen synthesis is increased and the skins’ integrity is strengthened. Use daily for protection and antioxidant properties and at night as a restorative treatment. A few drops of Vitamin C serum are easily absorbed. Always follow with your prescribed moisturiser and a sunscreen. Be sure to apply sparingly as any excess will oxidise on the skin and can result in congestion. Don’t forget to treat the back of the hands as well.
