Ways to mental wellbeing this winter

Discover new ways to keep mentally well whilst getting the most out of life.

As we gear up for winter, it’s important to recognise the challenge the season can be on our mental wellbeing. A lack of sun, combined with rainy and cold weather keeping us indoors can impact on our mental wellbeing. Try a few of these simple, yet effective strategies for improved head health, and turn the winter dull into something positive.

Take the five-a-day mental wellbeing challenge

A New Economics Foundation Foresight Project on Mental Capital and Wellbeing research report suggests that building these five actions into daily life is important for your wellbeing:

Connecting – make meaningful connections, listen more and find new ways to connect at home, work, school, or in your local community.

Giving – of your time and do something nice for a friend or stranger.

Taking notice – remember the simple things that bring joy to your life.

Keep learning – be on the lookout for new experiences and challenges, and embrace them.

Being active – a healthy body is a healthy mind.

Try introduce each of these actions into your daily routine, and you will begin to feel the benefits.

Move indoors

It can be hard to be active and get enough exercise during winter. Exercising does however make you feel good, so discover ways to incorporate indoor activities into your exercise routine, such as taking the stairs instead of the lift, or find an indoor fitness class that you enjoy. Do what you can, enjoy what you do, be active and move your mood.

Go dry

Give Dry July a try. Give up alcohol for the month of July and raise funds to improve the wellbeing of people dealing with cancer. Not only will an alcohol-free month keep your mind more alert and focused, but raising funds for a worthy cause should put a smile on your face.
