Victoria sets record with 532 COVID-19 cases as NSW warns of “critical time”
The state of Victoria has seen another massive spike in coronavirus cases, its highest since the pandemic began.

Victoria has reported another daily record of COVID-19 cases, with 532 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. This is the highest daily total since the outbreak began.

Six people in Victoria with COVID-19 have also died, all aged between 50s and 90s.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says five of the six deaths were linked to outbreaks at aged care facilities.

Today’s record high now brings Victoria’s total to 4542 active cases.

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton says the outbreaks in aged care facilities represent “a tragedy for the families” involved.

“The numbers are disturbing,” he added. “Where there are outbreaks in aged care, the mortality is extremely high,” he said. “Deaths in aged care made up almost half of deaths in the UK, so these are critical areas.”

Andrews says unless people in the state change their behaviour, they will continue to see cases rise at “unacceptably high levels”.

“Critical time” for New South Wales

Meanwhile, New South Wales has reported 17 new COVID-19 cases today. Eight of which are returned travellers.

Four of the cases are linked to a funeral cluster in south-west Sydney with others linked to the Thai Rock cluster in Wetherill Park.

NSW Chief Health Officer, Kerry Chant, has urged people throughout the state fo double down on coronavirus safety measures by avoiding non-essential travel, large gatherings and getting tested.

Chant warns that while most cases are linked to known clusters, community transmission is still happening.

“This is a critical time over the next three to four weeks and if we can all play our part in changing behaviours and reducing interactions it will help us control the spread of COVID-19,” she said.

“This is an anxious time. I think this is a critical time where we need the community to modify their behaviours.”
