Victoria records deadliest day since the beginning of the pandemic
The state of Victoria has recorded six COVID-19-related deaths in the past 24 hours, marking its deadliest day since the pandemic began.

The people who died were all connected to aged-care centres, three in their 90s and three in their 80s.

In addition to the six deaths, 300 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Victoria today.

In total, 447 cases have been linked to 35 aged-cared facilities in the state alone.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says that while the amount of new cases today is lower than yesterday’s, nobody should be “trying to provide definitive commentary that we’ve turned corners or we’re at a peak or any of that.”

206 people in Victoria are in hospital with COVID-19, with 41 of those in intensive care.

Andrews says they have boosted the number of Australian Defence Force members to help deal with contact tracing.

“If for whatever reason, you don’t answer the phone, then ADF personnel will be knocking on your door and they will be bringing the public health response to you and they will do that interview on your doorstep,” said the Premier.

101 fines were handed out yesterday to people who had breached restrictions.

While the Australian Medical Association has called for tougher lockdown in Victoria, Andrews is “confident” in the stage three restrictions imposed on Metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire.

“We always said this would get worse before it gets better … I’ve got no advice to move to a so-called stage four, and I don’t want to change those rules at the moment,” he said.
