Victoria hits another coronavirus record with 484 new infections
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has announced a record 484 new cases in his state in the last 24 hours.

Ninety-seven of those 484 cases are connected to known and contained outbreaks. 387 cases are under investigation.

The previous record for daily increase in cases was 428, reported last Friday.

Andrews said detailed analysis has revealed that from 3,810 cases, which are the cases between July 7 and July 21, nearly 9 in 10 – or 3,400 cases – did not isolate between when they first felt sick and when they went to get a test.

The premier also revealed that of people who did go and get tested, 53 per cent – or 2,056 of those 3,810 cases – did not isolate between when they had their test taken and when they got the results of that test.

“We can’t have, any longer, 9 out of 10 people taking too long between when they first feel sick and when they get tested,” Andrews said.

“And we certainly cannot have 1 in 2 people who are waiting for a test result simply going about their business as if they didn’t have symptoms, as if they weren’t waiting for a test result, as if this wasn’t a global pandemic. We just can’t have that any longer.”

The premier pleaded with Victorian residents to get tested if they feel sick, and to ensure they isolate from the moment they feel sick.

“The only thing you can do when you feel sick – the one and only thing that you can and must do when you feel sick – is to go and get tested,” Andrews said.

“Nothing else is acceptable. You must go and get tested when you feel sick. That is the only thing that you can and must do. And if people don’t do that, then we will continue to see numbers increase.

“I’m being as frank, as blunt, as clear as I can. Because this message is central to the overall success – or otherwise – of the strategy and the restrictions that we have in place.”
