A man who died in an explosion, described as a “sonic boom”, in South Auckland yesterday has been named.

Jamey Lee Bowring, a 24-year-old contractor from Huntly, in the Waikato region, was working at Salters Cartage in Wiri on Tuesday afternoon when the explosion occurred.

It is alleged he was carrying out unauthorised welding when a 100,000 litre fuel tank exploded. Bowring was a contractor to Huntly-based company RaceWorks which was apparently on site to measure walkways.

Four others were injured by the explosion and surrounding streets were shut down in the aftermath with witnesses reportedly diving for cover due to the impact of the explosion.

Police and WorkSafe NZ investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the matter has been referred to the Coroner.

Police say they would like to “offer their deepest sympathies to the family during this difficult time”.
